York - Around the City Walls

Before you set off on your awesome adventure, there are a few things you need to know...

The city walls are open from 8am until dusk every day except Christmas Day. There may also be occasions when the walls are closed for emergency repairs, or due to inclement weather conditions, particularly when icy during the winter. We would always recommend checking before setting off and you can read about the Walls by clicking here. 

The route isn’t friendly for wheelchair users and pushchairs due to open sides, uneven paths and tricky steps.

Tracker dogs aren’t allowed on the city walls – unless they’re assistance dogs – so please don’t bring your four-legged friends along for this adventure.

The closest long stay pay and display car park to the Trail start point is at Foss Bank (YO31 7PL), just across the road from where your quest begins. Or why not try York’s Park and Ride service?

There are some fantastic events in York's calendar, all of which are great times to visit this beautiful city. However, you may find that some of the clues on this Trail may become obstructed or difficult to access on these occasions. There are public toilets available just after Clue 06, and the route passes several pubs and a few cafes along the way. There are great picnic spots along the river and in the Museum Gardens if the weather is nice.
