Things to do in Worcester Whatever the Season

Worcester on the banks of the River Severn is a hidden gem in itself with a high street full of both chains and independent shops, regular markets and plenty of places to eat and drink. The casual visitor will find lots of things to do without going off the beaten track.

Sometimes though, it's nice to do something a little different and we’ve chosen 4 of our favourite hidden gems to enjoy depending on the season.

Winter

Climbing is often seen as a specialist sport, but really anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can enjoy indoor climbing. Worcester’s Vertical Limit Indoor Rock Climbing centre is in a Victorian building in Shrub Hill Road close to the railway station. The centre itself is only a decade or so old and caters for ages from 5 years old! Start ‘em young, I say!  The Saturday morning kids club is a fabulous introduction for children, and adults can try the sport on a very reasonable pay as you go basis. Of course you don’t have to wait for winter to have a go!

Spring and Autumn

Our favourite walk in the spring and autumn is along the river at Worcester, but if you decide to walk be aware that the river often floods, so choose your time of year carefully! There are lots of landmarks to enjoy as you walk along the southern bank from the racecourse or Cripplegate Park, including a view across the river of Glover's Needle. This city landmark is the tallest spire in the country (around 245 ft) to have such a narrow angle of taper and there is lots of interesting things to do around it. Continue the walk and eventually you will reach Diglis Bridge, cross the bridge and turn left so the river is now on your left and you will come to the newly developed Diglis Basin Marina which has lots of things to see and a pub for that all important refreshment stop (!!) before you return along the river to your start point.

Summer

During the warm summer months (if we get them), families can easily spend a whole day in Cripplegate Park where there are many things to do and enjoy. There are children's play areas (with a rope climbing frame), tennis courts, bowling greens and grassy areas to enjoy a picnic in the sunshine. There are bands playing in the weekend afternoons throughout the summer. And there are refreshments available in the Sons of Rest building. Such a lovely place to chill.

Anytime

What about a parkrun? Worcester’s parkrun is held in Worcester Woods Country Park, so if you are looking for things to do on a Saturday morning you can head along there and either walk, run or jog or if you don't fancy being that active there is always a need for volunteers and marshals. Children, dogs, pushchairs and smiles all welcome! Kathy, one of the Treasure Trails partners is a keen participant, so if you want some insider knowledge - get in touch.

If you don't know Worcester at all, we'd recommend trying one of our Worcester Treasure Trails
